1 step closer to DDR

1:00pm - 6:00pm

Today I ran 5 subjects in the Dimensions of Learning (circle) v3 experiment.

I also worked out a little instruction script to tell to subjects and created a basic excel sheet to input our subject data into. We're really close to starting the experiment.

We're displaying blocks now!

2:30 - 5:30

The program for the Cross-modal learning experiment is really coming along. Today I worked out how to display a string of "letters" (shapes,) and how to prompt the subject for input tduring the test blocks. I also wrote a 'record' function that will record the data for each response, but right now it just traces the data.

I still need to figure out how to get sound to play properly when I want it to, and I need to know how we are going to load in blocks of words and how we are going to save data. Also, we need to write the actual instructions that will tell the subjects what to do in the experiment.

Research: Mathematical Psychology and Serial Position Effect

Nothing came up with those two keywords together but a journal worth looking into is Journal of Mathematical Psychology. Again, there isn't anything for serial position effect specifically.

1:30pm - 6:30pm

Today I ran 4 subjects in the Dimensions of Learning (circle) v3 experiment.

I also played around with the DDR.

Thursday, January 25, 2007

Today I looked into finding a cheap Playstation 2 console for the memory consolidation experiment. I then added more detail to the IRB application, and worked on the Methods section of the protocol for the study. I emailed you the methods section.

1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Today I ran 2 subjects in the Dimensions of Learning (circle) v3 experiment.

I also added a lot of the finishing touches to the IRB application, which should be done and ready to send in by the end of the week.

When i'm in tomorrow i'll run more subjects and continue working on the Sleep and memory experiement.

2pm-5pm

Today I went over the actionscript program for the disocovery learning experiment and tried to get a handle on what the previous programmer had already done and what still remains to be done. I made additional comments on the program so that I can understand it better in the future. I also consulted the actionscript tutorial and dictionary to continue learning the language. I also began looking for papers on discovery learning.
Today, I searched for papers having to do with cross-modal artificial grammar learning. I did not find a lot that included all aspects I was looking for. Most seemed to have to do with learning an artificil grammer using one or two senses, but did not combine multiple modalities into one grammar.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of any good tutorials on flash online that I could look at in my free time.

1:00PM - 6:00 PM

Today Jason talked to me about what we needed to go forward with the sleep memory experiment. Then he showed me the IRB Application form that we need to fill out to get our experiment approved and into production. The rest of the day I looked over the form and began filling out what I could.

Next week I'll run some subjects and hopefully finish the IRB application with help from a template.

Storyboard

2:00 - 5:00 PM

Today we begun work on the actual experiment. I met with Jason and Jennifer, who's new in the lab, and we discussed the layout and logistics of the experiment. We decided to use the same tones, shapes, and grammars as in the Conway & Christiansen paper.

I spent the rest of the time developing a more detailed flow chart for the experiment, and wrote some high-level code on paper while Jennifer learned the basics of Flash.

1/11/07 - JasonM

2:00 - 5:30

Today I got more familiar with Flash, including the basics of Action Script
and the way of showing "slides" in a program.

Also, I read the Research Article Statistical Learning Withing and Between
Modalities, by Christopher Conway and Morten Christiansen, to
understand what the experiment is going to explore.

Example Post

Today I ran 21 subjects in the Dimensions of Learning (Circle) experiment.

Also, I found a number of papers addressing the question of impaired performance when two learning tasks are given simultaneously. I printed out the most recent and relevant and placed them in Jason's mailbox.

When I am in again next week I will run more subjects in the Circle experiment and begin reading and summarizing the learning task papers.

Purpose of this Blog

Hi guys,

The purpose of this blog is to allow you to communicate with me and with each other the progress that is being made on your projects.

Each day you are in the lab should end with a quick update to this blog. Let me know what you did that day and what still needs doing that you will work on the next time you are in. Also, if you're encountering any problems in your project, let me know what I can do to help.

I may post back questions or comments or email you directly for small issues. The blog will allow us to communicate asynchronously and keep a repository of all past communications so we can refer to them easily later.

Next I'll post an example update to give an even clearer example of what I'm looking for.
